Spiritual Law of Consciousness

This month I'm focusing my talks on "Spiritual Law." In June, I attended Brooks Divinity School summer school session. One of the classes I attended was on "Spiritual Law" given by Dr. Anne Kunath. Every year I take one of her classes as a refresher in practical Christianity -- putting Divine Science to work. Anne studied for years with Catherine Ponder; Unity's prosperity teacher. Anne is really great in explaining these principles -- I truly enjoy her.

Today I am speaking on the "Spiritual Law of Consciousness." Spiritual Law is principle. It works consistently - not sometimes but all the time. It is always at work whether we are conscious of it or not. It is always true to our consciousness. What is consciousness? Some say to know thy self. Some say we are human because we can reflect back on who we are, and call that consciousness. Webster dictionary says, "the totality of one's thoughts, feelings, and impressions; conscious mind."

So today I am talking about what is going on in our thoughts, feelings, impressions, and the conscious and subconscious mind. Obviously, this is only touching on the subject. We have classes on this - the "Basic Principles of Divine Science" and "Spiritual Psychology" which are being offered this fall.

In Divine Science we have the trinity of creative expression at the absolute or God level, and at our personal level. Today we are working with the personal level. I'm reminded of Jesus Christ saying, where two or more in agreement it is done accordingly. This is a spiritual principle. When we have our conscious mind & sub-conscious mind in agreement it is done. If our desire and belief is conflicting, it is not done accordingly -- but something else or not at all.

Understanding the make-up of these will help. Briefly for today's purposes -- the conscious mind is being aware of thoughts, feelings, emotions, and impressions. The sub-conscious mind is the store house - much like a hard drive for your computer, and the conscious mind can retrieve past information at anytime for reflecting, comparing situations, and building upon experiences - new understanding.

Whenever a situation comes up in your life - the subconscious mind kicks in to help understand. It will automatically recall past experiences and try to make sense of the current one compared to the one in memory. Because of this process we hardly ever see anything for what it truly is. We have all this other stuff added on to our experience. It colors all our perceptions. There was an example on a video I watched, on how our mind will try to make something that is totally new to our experience, and make it fit the mold of our past concepts. The example was an ink blot - and out of it you could possibly see the profile of Abraham Lincoln - the mind made what we knew fit that which we did not know.

Then we have all the emotions and feelings from past experiences remembered in our storage device - the subconscious mind. If we didn't like, Abraham Lincoln, then suddenly we would begin to feel judgmental, and our emotions would begin to get aroused with anger, hate, fear. Our mind will begin to recall all the reasons why we shouldn't like him.

Our subconscious mind is designed to protect us, and it takes care of all our bodily functions so we don't have to consciously remember to breath, or have a heart beat. It is the underlying program - much like the computer's operating system, such as DOS. It is there waiting to respond, to execute our very commands. We could say our conscious mind is the executor, but it mostly responds to what has already been stored from the past.

From this level of a trinity of creation; we have the conscious mind - our intellect. Then we add to the equation of working through our sub-conscious mind of past memory, feelings. Finally we have the outcome - our new creation; which may be desired or undesired fulfillment.

I once heard this saying, "If you keep doing the same thing, how can you expect a different result." Working with the Higher Consciousness, also known as Christ or Super consciousness, allows for new ideas to be received -- new awakenings in understanding. When in this higher level of consciousness we are bypassing the subconscious mind as a reference. We are in a pure state of experiencing.

Now after the experience we process through our conscious mind, and then download it to our memory bank. It can then get installed as a new experience just the way it was, or it gets integrated with other kinds of experiences which will allow it to make sense to us in this relative world of ours; which may actually be a misfile, and most often happens.

This happens because these higher level experiences don't fit in the norm of physical law or material physics. These follow new laws, spiritual law or spiritual physics. Which is only beginning to be looked at in the last 50 years, as quantum physics. The underlying law behind the material.

To get back to what I was getting to, is the fact that we get a lot of what we don't want in life. We have many mis-creations, we unintentionally created something. That is because of this relationship of our sub-conscious mind that has so much stuff stored in it, and most of it, if not all, is based on false beliefs, false perception.

There are two ways to create: by the law of attraction and by law of manifestation. Most people are using the law of attraction for it is the easiest to use -- it is from the 3rd dimension. Again, we are already using it - a baby learns very fast to scream and shortly a parent will arrive. Think of this principle as our magnet -- everything is out there, and comes to us like a frequency we are tuned to. If we don't like what we are getting, then it is time to begin to change our thoughts and feelings about things. Because we get according to our beliefs about our self and the world.

This last Sunday night, I ended up in a motel room in Hollister. I ended up there because I couldn't reach my daughter before leaving San Jose, and everyone was asleep when I got there. If you recall, last Sunday was very hot - a recorded 110 degrees in Hollister. While driving down, I thought it sure would be nice to go swimming tomorrow. Somehow this underlying thought was created. I ended up in a motel with a swimming pool. Unfortunately, the pool was filled with children and felt more like a hot tub.

The thought that came to me while showering, after cooking in the pool, was "why was I staying in this old motel - it was the kind that would have been $15 per night some 15-20 years ago. The only difference today was more coats of paint & $50 a night.

I realized this was my consciousness. I could just as easily be in a newer motel (Hollister doesn't have any fancy ones). It certainly was better than sleeping in my car - which I did think about and rejected rather quickly. Driving home was not an option do to having an early appointment for my car. Here I was in an older motel, although it was comfortable, and did have a refrigerator and decorated for Independence Day. Evidently, each room had its own decor.

Then the movie "Defending Your Life" came to my mind. This movie came out some years ago. It can be rented. What I saw at that moment in the shower was that scene where the leading man is in a mediocre motel, and the leading lady was in a fancy hotel with all the luxuries. This movie is about people who have died, and are at a place waiting for what's next.

When asked why she was staying in such a nice hotel, so much better than his? Her response was something like why not I deserve it. She had always been treating herself well during her life. And, he was always compromising his self worth -- afraid to ask for more, and being unhappy about it.

We hear a lot about one's self worth and self-esteem, and how when they are low many people experience depression. Unconsciously, we are saying don't give to me - I don't deserve it. Or, others have belief systems that there just isn't enough of God to go around. We say that God is everywhere, so God is right here, right now equally present in everything and everyone. So how can there not be enough God Substance to go around? It gets down to our consciousness. Our ability to receive. And, how do we change this.

Today I have given list of DENIALS given to me by Dr. Anne Kunath, that I am sharing with you. In Divine Science we have what we call creative denials to clear out false beliefs from our sub-conscious mind. A denial is the refusal to accept non truth. We have to begin to look at the world as though it is all right. We have to clean up our own minds to see the Truth.

Jesus the Christ said, Mark 2:22, "And no man pours new wine into old wineskins, so that the wine may not rend the skins and the skins be ruined and with wine run out; but they pour new wind into new wineskins." In metaphysics we are told of a chemicalization process which can happen when one pours in new ideas on top of old ones. They don't mix properly, and havoc may erupt in ones life. It is impossible to put more into an already full consciousness - we must empty it to allow the new to come in, to take root, and bring forth in our life.

And, Christ Jesus said, in John 8:31-32, "If you abide my word, you are truly my disciples. And, you will know the truth and the truth shall make you free." We need to free ourselves of false beliefs in limitation, separation, death, illness, poverty. I ask that you begin to use this list of Denials daily for the next week. Anne Kunath told us that she has all her students practice this list for a week prior to starting a new class. While Emma Curtis Hopkins, the early teacher of New Thought, gave her students a month of practicing denials prior to attending class.

I ask that you give yourself a week of practicing this list, and share next week any results. Let us say these together now.

Today's Affirmation:
"I am a perfect expression of wholeness in action."
