"Giving Up Illness and Disease"

Today we are focusing on our beliefs about illness and disease, and how they stand in the light of truth. Are we willing to give up our old ideas about our self for the realization of our oneness and wholeness in God?

A year or so ago I found this synopsis titled "A short history of Medicine." It is meant to be funny. "Doctor, I have an earache..." 500 B.C. "Here, eat this root." 300 A.D. "That root is heathen. Say this prayer (please God)." 1750 A.D. "That prayer is superstition. Drink this potion." 1900 A.D. "That potion is snake oil. Swallow this pill." 1945 A.D. "That pill is ineffective take this antibiotic." 2000 A.D. "That antibiotic is artificial. Here, eat this root."

This gave an example of how our beliefs have changed in treating illness. I’ve added on 2001 A.D. "That root is passed’. Here, have a light treatment." 2012 A.D. "Know the truth, ye are the light." I truly hope it doesn’t take that long. In truth there is no time.

Know the truth — that is all we have to do to experience perfect health. In today’s world we have developed so many ways to be sick. There seem to be more and more diseases all the time. And, they seem to be spreading faster. This last week I heard a startling statistic concerning a disease that is considered not contagious. How can this be? Scientific researcher, based on observation, now reason it as a gene in the DNA that gives the potential for this particular disease.

Our first false belief is that we can become sick. Does God know this of us? Is the question to ask. In Divine Science we are taught that God only knows its creations as part of itself -- forever whole and perfect. Therefore, if we experience less than wholeness, we have put our faith in the wrong place -- in worldly opinions and appearances.

Then we need to ask ourselves if we are we willing to change our beliefs. If not, ask "how do these false beliefs serve us?"

The more we can bridge what we know of God to be true, to be the truth of our self, we will be experiencing wholeness and perfect health consistently because that is what we are. In other words, when we experience illness we are not being true to who we are, we have put on a mask or beliefs about our self and our world.

This mask of false beliefs is imbedded in our cellular memory. It is of our subconscious mind. From the time we are in the womb we are being exposed to our parents beliefs, our family, our community, and the world. In the collective unconscious resides mass race beliefs. That is how a disease can spread quickly. In today’s world of mass media, TV, radio, the Internet, we are exposed so much more quickly to the thoughts and goings on of others.

It is mass race hysteria — faith in fear. Mankind forgetting its spiritual nature has become hypnotized in to believing this is life. We then believe these to be true without questioning by whose authority makes this true. We are constantly receiving false input and suggestions enforcing its reality upon us. This is the shell we must break through. It is but a mental constraint based upon false images, knowledge and beliefs.

Carolyn Myss, who wrote "Why people don’t heal, and how they can?" said that people identify with their problems. They are so identified that they use them to bond with other people. If only they would stop talking about their illness, stop focusing on them, and give them up, then they would heal." This reminds me of the saying "Give no thought and it shall die of malnutrition."

We must remember who and what we are! Sons of God, God in Self Manifestation, therefore health is our inheritance. What we are never changes. In Divine Science health is the natural state of the individual and is only waiting for their realization of perfection as their divine heritage. We stop looking through human eyes and use our spiritual eye, the single eye, and our bodies shall be full of light.

The following is a quote by Joel Goldsmith in "The Art of Spiritual healing." "Spiritual healing is realization; it does not bring about anything but realizes what is already there. This world is not an illusion. It is the concept we entertain of it that is the illusion.

Spiritual healing is based on the premise that disease has no externalized reality: they exist as only illusory beliefs or concepts. But matter is not unreal, the body is not unreal, this world is not unreal: This world is beautiful, immortal, and eternal. This world will never be dissolved, but our concepts of it will change, just as our concepts of body change."

We use prayer treatments to help us through our false beliefs and into the realization of God as the only being, as individual being. Treatment clears your thoughts of superstitions, ignorance and false theories.

In treatment we raise our vision, our single eye to the truth. We take our sights, our thinking off of the problem. We reason the falsity of the situation by enforcing what is true. Such as, "God is wholeness. God is self-manifesting in, through and as me. God as wholeness then I too must be wholeness. Therefore I am whole, I am perfect health. Disease no longer has any place in my body. Disease no longer has any place in my mind. I am perfect health now! My thoughts are of life. Everything I do supports life. All I am is life and more life. I am abundantly alive. And I rejoice in my aliveness. Thank you God. It is so!"

I would now like us to take a look at some of the falsities of illness or disease. Let’s name a few? Contagious, takes time to heal, some diseases are harder to heal than others, getting too cold or hot makes you sick, germs cause illness, food can make you sick or allergies, thoughts cause illness. Let us give these up.

A metaphysical falsehood is that our thoughts or words have power to hurt us. Its not the word or thought, it is the belief that we are subject to mental laws -- a step above physical laws. We can observe patterns of thoughts and see how we are experiencing our lives.

Some metaphysicians have associated thought patterns to different diseases and illnesses. Again this is based upon observation of outer effects for our answers. This process is helpful as long as we can see that we have allowed some outer condition to dominate our thinking losing sight of our spiritual nature and thus invite unpleasant experiences. But we are not to stay here. We are much more than our thoughts. The core of our being is Spirit. Yes, we must even give mental law up for spiritual realization for in truth we are spiritual beings, and therefore abide by spiritual laws, laws of the spirit.

Let us share now what we know of God. All Power, All Knowledge, All Action, Everywhere Present. This Lenten Season let us give up our false beliefs in illness and disease. When we hear of the latest fad illness — let us say to our self "That has no power over me for I am a Spiritual Being. Today I choose to live by the spiritual laws of grace."
